What older children want from a story
- Language that is literary but clear, with images you can almost hear and touch.
- A hero with a flaw or a mistaken belief that causes part of the problem, and who changes by the end.
- A real dilemma tied to the theme, and sometimes a subplot.
- Fair-play mysteries, with the clues there for a sharp listener to spot.
- Irony, dry understatement and running gags, never cruel.
- No explaining the joke or the moral, and no talking down.
Why audio works at this age
Many 8 to 10 year olds read on their own, and at the end of a long day an audio story lets them close their eyes and still get a whole story. A Keoma story is produced like a small radio drama, with a narrator, a voice for each character, music and sound effects, which older children often enjoy more than a single voice reading.
Still a bedtime story
Stories for this age can end chapters on a light cliffhanger, but only in daytime stories. With the Bedtime mood there is no cliffhanger and no new problem near the end, and the last scene slows down.
Let them choose: older children like picking the heroes, the world and the mood themselves, and choosing makes them more likely to listen to the end.
Questions parents ask
Is Keoma too young for a 10 year old?
Keoma writes for children up to 12, and stories for 8 to 10 year olds have more complex plots and humour. The heroes are animal and magical characters, so some older children prefer the Adventurous or A little spooky moods.
Can my child make stories on their own?
No. Stories are made from the parent’s side of the app. Kids mode is for listening: it shows the stories you allow, in a locked space with no ads and no chat.
Can my child listen in French to practise?
Yes. Every story can be made in English or in French, written directly in that language rather than translated.
