Search for a “personalized bedtime story app” and you will find products that have almost nothing in common. Some write a brand-new story starring your child every night. Some are beautiful little speakers that play whatever you record. One lets your child build a story from pre-recorded pieces. All of them call themselves personal, and all of them can be the right choice for a particular family.
This guide sorts them out. We checked every price and feature on the brands’ own websites and App Store pages on 27 October 2026, and we say where each one is strong and where it is not.
A note on bias: we make Keoma, one of the products below. We have tried to be as fair to the others as we would want them to be to us, including saying plainly where Keoma is weaker. No one paid to appear here, and there are no affiliate links.
The short answer
- You want a screen-free device your child controls alone: Lunii (French catalogue, choose-your-story wheel), Yoto (cards, big English library and a French one), Toniebox (figurines, from age 1) or Merlin (French public-radio podcasts included).
- You want new stories made for your child, on a phone you already own: an AI story app such as Oscar Stories, Moonbeam, Gramms or Keoma.
- You want those stories to sound like a radio play, with a cast of voices, music and sound effects, in English or French: that is the gap Keoma was built for.
- You want a grandparent’s own voice: Yoto Make Your Own cards, a Creative-Tonie or Merlin recordings let them record real readings; Gramms clones a family voice with AI.

How we compared them
We looked at the things parents tell us actually matter at 7:45 pm:
- What kind of personalization. Is the story new and about your child, assembled from pieces, or something you record yourself?
- How it sounds. One voice reading a text, or a produced story with several voices, music and sound effects? Children forgive a lot, but a flat voice at bedtime gets switched off quickly.
- Language. Many AI apps are English-first. If you are raising your child in French, or in two languages, this narrows the field fast.
- Screens. Does the child need a phone or tablet in their hands, or is it a dedicated device?
- Price over a year, including the device and any subscription.
- Openness about AI and data. Does the product say clearly when stories or voices are generated, and what happens to your child’s name?
The screen-free players
Lunii (Ma Fabrique à Histoires)
The French classic. Your child turns a wheel to choose a hero, a place, a companion and an object, and Lunii plays a matching pre-recorded story. The device costs €69.90, and the optional Lunii+ subscription costs €8.90 a month or €89 a year for one audiobook a month, according to its March 2026 terms. Lunii says its stories are “écrites et racontées sans IA”, written and told without AI, and families can record their own stories in the app.
Best for: French-speaking families who want a sturdy device a three-year-old can use alone. Watch for: the “personalization” is a clever combination of fixed pieces, not a story about your child, and the catalogue is mostly in French.
Yoto
A card-based player: slot in a card, the audiobook plays. The Yoto Player costs €129.99 and the Yoto Mini €99.99 on its EU store, and Yoto Club starts at €4.99 a month. The library is large in English and includes a French section with publishers such as Gallimard Jeunesse and Bayard. Make Your Own cards let you record or upload your own audio. Yoto’s public AI policy says it “will not use AI as a substitute for creative talent”.
Best for: families who want quality published audiobooks and a device the child controls. Watch for: nothing is written for your child unless you record it yourself, and cards add up.
Toniebox 2
Put a figurine on the box and it plays that figurine’s story. The French store sells a starter set with the Toniebox 2 for €129.99, and a Creative-Tonie (€11.99) holds up to 90 minutes of your own recordings. It is certified from age 1, which makes it one of the few options for toddlers.
Best for: the youngest listeners and collectors. Watch for: each new story is a new figurine to buy.
Merlin
A speaker from Bayard and Radio France that costs €89.99 and comes with more than a thousand podcasts from French public radio and Bayard included, with no subscription. You can add up to ten personal recordings.
Best for: French families who love public-radio kids’ podcasts. Watch for: French only, and nothing personal unless you record it.
The AI story apps
Oscar Stories
One of the better-known AI story apps. Your child is the hero, and you choose characters and settings. Premium costs $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and the first stories are included at no cost. Its website lists ten languages including French, while its App Store pages list English only, so check before you subscribe if you need French.
Best for: trying AI stories cheaply. Watch for: narration is one AI voice at a time rather than a cast.
Moonbeam
An English-only iOS app with six narrators, background music, thirty themes and a choose-your-path mode. Premium is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year. Very young app, with only a handful of ratings so far.
Gramms
Gramms’ angle is the family voice: record a few seconds and a cloned voice of a parent or grandparent narrates. Stories include your child’s name and can be made in six languages including French. Premium is $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year, with a limited plan at no cost. Its App Store listing explains which AI providers receive your child’s name and age, which we appreciate.
Keoma
Keoma is our app. A parent picks a hero, a world, a mood and a small lesson; Keoma writes an original story for the child’s age and produces it like a radio play, with a narrator, a different voice for each character, music and sound effects. Stories are written directly in English or French, not translated. Plans are monthly, from €6.90, counted in story minutes, and you can listen to real sample stories without an account before deciding.
Where Keoma is weaker: there is no Keoma device, so a grown-up’s phone, tablet or computer does the playing (the player can darken the screen and has a fading sleep timer). There is no App Store or Google Play app yet. It is a young service with very few public reviews. And unlike Yoto or Merlin, there is no library of publishers’ audiobooks. More in What is Keoma?.
What to check before you pay for any of them
- Listen to a full sample first, at bedtime volume. Does the voice soothe or grate after five minutes?
- Check the language of the stories, not just of the app’s menus. They are often different.
- Read what happens to your child’s name. AI apps send it to the companies that write and voice the story. A good product names them in its privacy policy.
- Look for a grown-up gate. Can your child wander into settings, purchases or other content?
- Count the real yearly cost, device plus subscription plus cards or figurines.
- Ask whether AI is disclosed. Some families want no AI at all, and that is a perfectly good reason to choose Lunii, Yoto or Merlin. Others are happy with AI as long as it is said plainly.
