Parents who find Keoma usually already know one of three names: Lunii, the French storytelling box; Yoto, the card player; or Oscar Stories, one of the best-known AI story apps. This page puts the four side by side. We make Keoma, so we have kept to facts you can check on each brand’s own site (we did, on 27 October 2026) and we say where Keoma loses.

1. What “personal” means in each
Lunii lets your child spin a wheel to choose a hero, a place, a companion and an object, then plays a pre-recorded story built from those choices. It feels personal to a four-year-old because they chose it, but the story is not about them. Lunii also lets families record their own stories.
Yoto plays published audiobooks and podcasts from cards. The personal part is the Make Your Own card, onto which you record or upload your own audio: a grandparent reading, a family song.
Oscar Stories generates a new story with AI, with your child as the hero and the characters and setting you pick.
Keoma also generates a new story with AI: you choose a hero, a world, a mood and, if you like, a lesson such as sharing or courage, and the story is written for your child’s age.
2. How they sound
This is where the four differ most, and where Keoma is built to be different. Lunii and Yoto use human narrators and professionally produced audio, which is hard to beat. Oscar Stories narrates with an AI voice you can choose. Keoma produces each story like a small radio play: a narrator, a different voice for each character, a music bed and sound effects, so the shy dragon never sounds like the wise old oak. If you are curious, the quickest test is to play a Keoma sample and an Oscar story back to back at bedtime volume.
3. English, French or both
Lunii’s catalogue is mainly French. Yoto’s is mostly English with a growing French library. Oscar Stories lists ten languages including French on its website, while its App Store pages list English only, so check the language of the stories themselves before subscribing. Keoma writes every story directly in English or French, not translated, and a child profile can listen in both, which is useful for bilingual families (we wrote a guide to bedtime stories in a second language).
4. Screens and independence
Here Lunii and Yoto win clearly. They are dedicated, screen-free devices a three- or four-year-old can run alone, in their bedroom, without a phone in sight (Yoto has a small pixel display for icons and the time). Oscar Stories and Keoma run on a parent’s phone or tablet. Keoma’s player helps: it can darken the screen while the story plays and has a sleep timer that fades the story out, and kids mode locks the child into the stories you allowed. But it is still a phone on the bedside table. If a separate device matters to you, that is a strong reason to pick Lunii or Yoto.
5. AI, safety and data
Lunii markets its stories as written and told “sans IA”, and Yoto’s published policy says it “will not use AI as a substitute for creative talent”. If your family prefers no AI at all, those are honest choices. Oscar Stories and Keoma are AI products. At Keoma we say so on every page: scripts are written by AI language models and voiced with AI voices (ElevenLabs), each script gets an AI safety review for the child’s age before it is recorded, parents can listen first, and kids mode has no ads, no chat and no microphone. Stories never include the child’s name (the same story is replayed by brothers and sisters), and the providers that process data are listed in our privacy policy. Our guide to AI stories and safety lists the questions worth asking any AI app, including ours.
6. What a year costs
- Lunii: €69.90 for Ma Fabrique à Histoires, plus €89 a year if you add Lunii+ (one audiobook a month). Around €159 in the first year with the subscription, less if you buy stories one by one.
- Yoto: €129.99 for the Yoto Player (€99.99 for the Mini) plus Yoto Club from €4.99 a month if you want it. Around €190 in the first year at the entry Club price, plus any cards you buy.
- Oscar Stories: $39.99 a year for Premium (€39.99 on the French App Store), on a device you already own.
- Keoma: from €6.90 a month, so €82.80 for a year on the entry plan, on a device you already own. Plans are counted in story minutes; listening again is always included. See plans and prices for what each plan includes.
Devices last for years and keep their stories, so their cost per year falls over time. Apps cost the same every year you use them.
So which one?
- Choose Lunii if you want a robust French-language storyteller your child can use alone from age 3, with no AI.
- Choose Yoto if you want a large library of published audiobooks, mostly in English, on a device, and like recording your own cards.
- Choose Oscar Stories if you want to try AI stories starring your child at the lowest price and single-voice narration is fine.
- Choose Keoma if you want new stories for your child that sound like a radio play, with a cast, music and sound effects, in English or French, and you are comfortable with a phone or tablet doing the playing.
They are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of families have a Lunii or a Yoto in the bedroom and use an app for car journeys, holidays or the night when only a story about them and a dragon will do.
